These small dark colored beetles are an invasive pest in many homes. The adult black carpet beetle is black in color and oblong shaped and ranges in size from 1 8 up to 3 16 in length. Little brown beetle group the beetle you have is small brown beetle that lacks distinctive markings. The larva of the carpet beetle is covered in visible thick brown stripes.

Also called the unicorn beetle the rhinoceros beetle xyloryctes jamaicensis is a large black or dark brown harmless beetle. Black carpet beetles are similar in size to the varied carpet beetle but are solid black and have the last antenna segment elongated. There are nearly 200 species of carpet beetles in the subfamily attageninae. Hair is found on the rear portion of the abdomen. Carpet beetles have a body that is wider towards the end.

Colour dark brown to black. One of the identifying features of these large beetles is the single horn on their heads. Their larvae can chew through fabric damaging clothing furniture coverings and carpets. This helps them to keep predators away.

The hair is organized in a way that it forms a combination of dark and light patches. If you notice holes in your furnishings and evidence of carpet beetles it is important to get rid of the larvae.
